It is often accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by fee\u00adlings of hel\u00adp\u00adless\u00adness and incomprehension\u2014does the child sim\u00adply not try hard enough? But be careful: care\u00adless mista\u00adkes are often the real reason. An annoy\u00ading and per\u00adsis\u00adtent pro\u00adblem for many child\u00adren, but one that can be sol\u00adved with spe\u00adci\u00adfic strategies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The root cau\u00adse of most of this is time pres\u00adsu\u00adre in exams. Focu\u00adsed on finis\u00adhing, child\u00adren for\u00adget to be careful\u2014no mat\u00adter how often they have been remin\u00added before\u00adhand. The first step is the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre always to prac\u00adti\u00adse time manage\u00adment with the child. At the start of every exam, take a moment to plan rough\u00adly how much time is available per task, and then get on with sol\u00adving the tasks\u2014always do the easy ones first and lea\u00adve the dif\u00adfi\u00adcult ones until last. Only then can you keep a cool&nbsp;head.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And only with a cool head is the child able to app\u00adly all the other spe\u00adci\u00adfic stra\u00adte\u00adgies against care\u00adless mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>For exam\u00adp\u00adle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In maths, wri\u00adte down every step. Try\u00ading to do small cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon steps in your head is the source of most care\u00adless mista\u00adkes. This also appli\u00ades to units of mea\u00adsu\u00adre\u00adment, which are easi\u00adly mixed up and cost points. Always wri\u00adte them down&nbsp;too!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>After each task: quick\u00adly check your cal\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon! Does it make sen\u00adse? For exam\u00adp\u00adle, with sub\u00adtrac\u00adtions: does adding give you the ori\u00adgi\u00adnal value&nbsp;again?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>For spel\u00adling: always plan it as a sepa\u00adra\u00adte step at the end. First the wri\u00adting pha\u00adse, then take a quick breath, then the che\u00adcking pha\u00adse. It can help, for exam\u00adp\u00adle, to go through the words back\u00adwards. This tricks the brain\u2019s \u201ccare\u00adless&nbsp;mode\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every child also has their own spe\u00adci\u00adfic care\u00adless mista\u00adkes that they make again and again (for exam\u00adp\u00adle, mixing up minus and plus, mis\u00ads\u00adpel\u00adling cer\u00adtain words, for\u00adget\u00adting capi\u00adtal let\u00adters). The\u00adse need to be iden\u00adti\u00adfied and avo\u00adid\u00adance stra\u00adte\u00adgies tail\u00ado\u00adred to the child need to be prac\u00adti\u00adsed. With a bit of crea\u00adti\u00advi\u00adty and per\u00adsis\u00adtence, this works in most cases.
