Mathematics does not necessarily have to become a favorite subject, but with suitable tutoring, grade improvement can usually be achieved. It requires perseverance and diligence, because without regular practice it will be difficult to achieve internalized solution strategies in the medium and long term.
Sometimes it is necessary to break a real vicious circle: the less you practice, the more difficult it becomes; conversely, the more you practice, the easier it becomes, and ideally mathematics even becomes enjoyable, because as soon as it “works,” it is a very satisfying subject. The results are clearly right or wrong—the feedback is therefore very concrete.
Tutoring in Mathematics — The Challenges
Often it starts with the presentation itself, which, if not neatly noted, can already lead to careless errors, lack of clarity, and ultimately incorrect results. Only when the foundation is solid can you build on it; this applies particularly to mathematics. Furthermore, it means practice, practice, practice. What has been learned must be internalized through repeated repetition. In doing so, one must not forget to develop a solid understanding of the material; this also requires somewhat more perseverance for some than for others. Those who are satisfied too early will usually not be rewarded with good grades in mathematics.
How Can We Offer Good Math Tutoring?
Teachers often use teaching materials in which the topics are not clearly communicated. Especially at the gymnasium level, often no teaching material is used at all. Students must make do with notebook entries alone, even though there are excellent teaching materials available. Using good materials that are organized by topic, we can demonstrate the systematic nature of the subject and specifically work through difficult topic areas. With worksheets and theory materials, our teachers explain topics and provide many exercises, because now it means practice, practice, and practice again! In school, there is often too little repetition, which leads to many uncertainties. In tutoring, we take the time for repetition.
A Case Study:
Marisa (6th grade): She has a 5 in mathematics and the goal of passing the entrance exam for the long-term gymnasium. However, she usually cannot solve the exam questions from previous years. During one semester before the exam, she learns in math tutoring using preparatory dossiers, step by step, that she can categorize the tasks by topic (for example, proportionality, plan changes, or probability). Since she now knows what she is dealing with, she can practice the task types and finds the right approach for the correct solution more and more quickly.
