Gymnasium tutoring Zurich
Tutoring at gymnasium level is very common. Your child has already achieved a lot—that’s why they’re in gymnasium. However, it’s normal not to be equally good in every subject—and at gymnasium the range of subjects is broad and the level is high. That’s why it’s worth sticking with it now, so your child reaches their goal: the Matura.
When does gymnasium tutoring make sense?
- The transition into gymnasium was close and you want to give your child the smoothest possible start, or ensure they pass the probation period.
- Your child is going through puberty and other interests become more important than school. Grades get worse, which further reduces motivation to learn. A negative cycle threatens to develop, and it’s important to break it early.
- Some weaker subjects cause ongoing difficulties and put a strain on the overall grade average.
- Your child benefits from some support with “cramming” for exams.
- It’s crunch time—your child needs good grades in the Matura. We prepare students specifically for the Matura exam. We’re also happy to simulate the situation of an oral exam with your child.
Gymnasium tutoring must be goal-oriented
Tutoring at Gymnasium level depends greatly on the student’s age and stage of development. In the lower years, the foundation for the rest of their time at Gymi is laid, so tutoring must be designed for the long term—meaning we place great value on ensuring that the relevant knowledge is truly internalised and understood, and we teach the child strategies for successful independent learning. It pays off to proceed step by step so that motivation is maintained and the student experiences a sense of self-efficacy through their own successes. In the higher years, where students are already used to performance-oriented learning, tutoring can often be very targeted and efficient and can be limited to explaining, checking, quizzing and revising—with rapid improvements in grades.
General tutoring methodology
Where it makes sense, we try to stick to the following learning strategy.
- Get an overview: What is it about?
- Make a connection: How does the content relate to me, what’s my stance on it?
- Work through it, learn: Facts are not only internalised, but also questioned and analysed, and linked to what has already been learned.
- Deepening phase: The content is deepened through repetition and practice.
- Transfer knowledge: The material is now familiar and it can (and should!) be linked to new ideas, content and concepts.
Would you like to book a free trial lesson?
A free trial lesson can take place at Open Learning Space Zurich, online, or by arrangement at your home. Afterwards, you decide whether your child would like to work with the teacher and what form the further gymnasium tutoring should take.
After that, the tutoring lessons are usually booked in packages of 10 lessons each. This has proven effective because, in our experience, a smaller number of tutoring lessons is usually not enough to make noticeable progress. In exceptional cases, however, a smaller number of lessons can also be arranged. Tutoring can take place at Open Learning Space, online, or by arrangement at your home.
