French Tutoring Zurich
Parlez-vous français?
In German-speaking Switzerland, French lessons have always been highly valued. The fact that every child in this country must master not just one foreign language (English) but two (English and French in German-speaking Switzerland) in regular school lessons is an unavoidable Swiss peculiarity.
French – a subject of importance in Switzerland
While the French language itself is not too difficult to learn, it still causes problems for many students. Unlike German, it has a Romance vocabulary and grammar. Also, French tends to have little relevance in the daily lives of most young people today, which is why learning motivation is sometimes low. Nevertheless, French is taught and graded throughout the entire school career – and therefore must not be neglected. As a small bonus, good French skills also immensely facilitate the learning of Italian, Spanish, or even Latin.
French tutoring is worthwhile!
French is a language that rewards relatively little learning effort in the right places with quickly visible success. For example, many students struggle with irregular verb forms that are insufficiently internalized and then cause problems later on when forming every newly learned tense. Or fundamental grammatical principles have been insufficiently understood and therefore cannot be applied correctly in the long term – even though they would actually be easily accessible with a good explanation and some practice. If one takes the time to take a step back and understand the basics, it often leads to ‘aha!’ moments and not infrequently even to joy in the French language.
How can we help?
Our French tutoring in Zurich helps students catch up on what they’ve missed, solidify current knowledge, and prepare for the future. Our tutors take the time to explain grammatical basics and practice them until they are truly solid and can be built upon. They have extensive practice material from various textbooks as well as their own wealth of didactic experience. We help with learning and reviewing fundamental or exam-relevant vocabulary, teach learning techniques, and assist in sorting out what is “important” and “less important.” We also frequently support newly arrived students from abroad who need to catch up to their class’s French level. Tutoring is conducted in French as often as possible during the entire lesson so that our students get practice in spoken language. This is essential for active language proficiency – and is often neglected in regular school lessons.
Why individual tutoring instead of a language course?
French tutoring is more individualized than an intensive language course. It is tailored to a student’s requirements and current knowledge level, supporting them where necessary. It is therefore better suited for targeted improvement of school performance.
Who are our tutors?
At Open Learning Space Zurich, we have teachers who can convey the joy of the French language and who value positive interpersonal experiences. Alongside the teacher’s expertise, a motivating learning atmosphere is the key to success in tutoring, especially for younger students.
